Frequently asked questions

What is MarkVault?

MarkVault is a free online Markdown editor and viewer that runs entirely in your browser. Write notes with live preview, organize them into a private knowledge base with folders, tags and wiki-links, sync across devices, and share documents with secret links — like a personal Notion or Obsidian, with AI built in.

Is MarkVault free to use?

Yes. The editor, viewer, cloud sync, offline mode and sharing are free — no credit card required. AI features use your own free API keys (Groq, Gemini and others), so nobody meters your usage. A Pro plan adds unlimited AI and premium sharing.

How do I open or view a Markdown (.md) file online?

Just open the app and drag any .md, .markdown or .txt file into the window — it renders instantly with GitHub Flavored Markdown, syntax-highlighted code, math and Mermaid diagrams. You can also paste a GitHub raw or Gist URL to import.

Can I convert Word, PDF or Excel files to Markdown?

Yes. Drop a .docx, .pdf, .pptx, .xlsx or .csv file into MarkVault and it converts to clean, editable Markdown. Word and Excel convert privately in your browser; you can also view or download the original file untouched.

Is my writing private?

Your files live in your browser and, if you sign in, in your own private cloud space that only your account can read. There's no tracking, AI keys stay on your device, and share links use unguessable cryptographic tokens — only people you give the exact link to can view a document.

Does MarkVault work offline?

Yes. MarkVault is an installable PWA — after the first visit it loads and works fully offline, and syncs your changes when you're back online.

How does MarkVault compare to Obsidian?

Both are Markdown-first knowledge bases. Obsidian is a desktop app with a large plugin ecosystem; semantic search, topic clustering and extracting tasks from prose each need a third-party plugin and setup. MarkVault runs in the browser with nothing to install and ships those on-device and free. Obsidian stores plain files on your disk and has far more plugins; MarkVault stores notes in browser storage, syncs through your own Google account, and can import an Obsidian vault as a .zip with folders intact.

How does MarkVault compare to Notion?

Notion is a collaborative workspace where tracking anything means structuring it into a database first. MarkVault reads unstructured prose — it finds commitments in ordinary sentences and clusters notes by meaning without you defining a schema. Notion is stronger for team databases and permissions; MarkVault is private by default, works offline, and keeps everything as plain Markdown you own.

Can MarkVault find to-dos in my notes automatically?

Yes — this is Open Loops (Cmd+Shift+O), and it does not need checkboxes. It reads your prose for commitments, so a sentence like “I’ll send Dana the draft by Thursday” becomes a tracked, dated item. It resolves natural-language dates against the date of the note they appear in rather than today, separates things you are waiting on other people for, tracks who you owe, understands recurring commitments like “every Monday”, and flags work you finished but never ticked. It runs entirely on your device and never edits a note unless you press something.

Do I need an API key or an account?

No account is needed at all — the app opens and works immediately. No API key is needed for semantic search, the Vault Atlas topic map, Open Loops, flashcard scheduling, the knowledge graph or version history; those all run on your device. Only the generative AI features (writing tools, chat, summarise, card generation) use a key, and you can use a free tier from Groq, Cerebras, Together, OpenRouter or Gemini.

Can I search my notes by meaning instead of keywords?

Yes. MarkVault runs a sentence-transformer model (all-MiniLM-L6-v2) inside your browser, so searching for “how we priced the launch” finds the right note even if it never uses those words. The same on-device index powers related-note suggestions, question-answering across the whole vault with citations, and the Vault Atlas topic map. The model is about 25 MB, downloaded once only after you explicitly choose to build the index, and your text never leaves the device.

Can I turn my notes into flashcards?

Yes. Any note can become a spaced-repetition deck using SM-2, the algorithm behind Anki and SuperMemo, with short learning steps before day-scale intervals. Cards are generated with AI (you preview and drop them before anything saves), but scheduling and review run entirely on your device and the cards are stored locally.
